Railroad Ephemera Packet
This packet of 4 pieces of RARE and interesting Railroad Ephemera consists of the following:
One (1) page from the 1918 1st Edition of the American Railway Express Co. Official Directory of Express Stations (primarily schedules for trains throughout the U.S). The American Railway Express Agency was the cargo company of choice in its days. After the consolidation of express companies during WWI, the American Railway Express Agency was the only express company in the U.S. In 1927 the name was changed to Railway Express Agency (REA). In return for a monopoly on the movement of traffic on passenger trains, the express company was obligated to accept any and all shipments destined anywhere in the U.S. The REA handled carloads of cattle, race horses, and trainloads of fruits and vegetables. Carloads of radioactive material were moved on regular schedules for the Atomic Energy Commission. There was practically nothing that was not handled at one time or another by this company, including circus animals.
One (1) sheet - Railway Company Long Distance Telephone Call Memo Pad - Early 1900s
One (1) sheet - Sand Springs (OK) Railway Co. Shops Invoice (blank) - Early 1900s
One (1) sheet - Sand Springs (OK) Railway Co. Car Report (blank) - Early 1900s
The Sand Springs Railway Company was incorporated February 6, 1911 and operated approximately 8 miles of track from Sand Springs east to Tulsa. The railroad was operated by electricity until 1955 when it discontinued passenger service and changed over to diesel locomotives.

These music sheets were soooo popular that we have been on a frantic search to find more for you, our fantastic customers! Sure enough, in the most unlikely place, we found some! So here you are!!!!!
The Etude Music Magazine premiered in October of 1883, published by the Theodore Presser company It was continuously published for almost 100 years, ending its incredible run in 1954 after serving millions of musicians. Each month, Etude magazine published from fifteen to twenty or more scores of piano etudes, grand master's works and songs from contemporary composers and the masters. The songs published in the Etude, though musically of very high quality were often quite different from the popular songs being published. In many cases, they are more classical in form and require higher levels of pianistic and vocal skills.

Fabric Amalgamated Workers of America Clothing tags (1949)
The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America was formed in 1914 as a direct result of a bitter union strike in 1910 involving members of the AFL affiliated United Garment Workers (UGW), the AFL leadership, and their employer, Hart Schaffner and Marx. By the 1920's, ACWA was the largest men's clothing union in the United States and was responsible for manufacturing a staggering 85% of men's garment.
The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America continued to grow through the 1950's and remained a dominant union in the manufacturer of men' suit through the 1960's and early 1970's. In 1976 it ended 62 year of organizing labor under the name Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America when it merged with the Textile Workers of America and formed a new union known as the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU).

Antique Player Piano Rolls/Box
We know that your imagination will go crazy with these wonderful antique player piano rolls! You can use them as they are in scroll (rolled up) form to embellish and then unwind, tear/cut them into pieces of ephemera for just about any of your art projects, use as pages in your altered books, utilize the performations as peek-a-boo slits, AND THEN use the box as an assemblage! What terrific fun these little pieces of Victorian memorabilia are!!
Simply described, a player piano is a self-playing piano. A piano roll is a roll of paper with perforations (holes) punched in it. The position and length of the perforation determines the note played on the piano.
Beginning around 1900 and continuing for the next three decades, for the first time in history, music could be heard on demand. The player piano was like a jukebox; its "discs" were the paper piano rolls. The unique player, however, did not use speakers or electricity; it actually played itself using air pressure-- hammers struck the strings, strings vibrated and wood resonated.
The music recorded on the player piano roll reflected the changing social fabric of the day--the end of Victorian convention and the beginning of the uninhibited modern thinking and free-spending practices of the twentieth century.

The New York Ledger Newspapers
Grab a piece of New York History!! In our recent travels through the highways/byways looking for treasures for all of our lovely artistic customers, we hit the jackpot and found and purchased a WONDERFUL stack of 25 New York Ledger Newspaper/Magazines ALL dated in the EARLY 1890s!!! Each newspaper contains 16 pages (front/back included in the count.)
The New York Ledger was a weekly story paper published in New York City. It was established in 1856 by Robert Bonner. The date of the Last Issue was 1898. The banner on each front piece reads "A journal of choice literature, romance, and useful information." Each newspaper contains one (1) large black and white image on the front, a full page of ads on the back, and anywhere from 2 to 6 black and white images on the internal pages. The pages are filled with many great stories - which translates to LOTS of great text for you to use in your artwork! The pages are oversized, measuring approximately 16" x 11" (length/width). As you might expect, the pages are yellowed with age and some have a few stain marks here and there (but that just leaves less "aging" that you have to do!!!). We think they are absolutely FABULOUS!!
Please allow us to pick one out for you, as there are too many to scan. The pictures below are SAMPLES ONLY (this may not be the one you get). Click on samples to enlarge |

History:
In the United States, nationwide food rationing was instituted in the Spring of 1942, and each member of the family was issued ration books by the Office of Price Administration (OPA). These books contained stamps and gave precise details of the amounts of certain types of food that you were allowed. Rationing insured that each person could get their fair share of the items that were in short supply due to the war effort and import reductions. By the end of the war, over a hundred million of each ration book was printed.
The Office of Price Administration (OPA) was in charge of rationing consumer goods such as sugar, coffee, shoes, household appliances, and other goods during World War II. The OPA accepted ration book applications and issued ration books, from which consumers tore out stamps in order to purchase food and other supplies at grocery stores.
Four different series of war ration books were issued. In 1942, five months after (December 8, 1941) the United States entered the Second World War, Book One" series were issued. In January 1943, "Book Two" series were issued. "Book Three" series were issued in October of 1943. And "Book Four" series were issued towards the end of 1943. Most ration restrictions didn't end until August 1945, with sugar rationing lasting in some parts of the country until 1947.
